First Language Maintenance and Development - (FLMD)

First Language Maintenance and Development programs support our school community with the provision of additional language programs that maintain and extend the home language of reception to year 6 students from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds and to support Aboriginal students to learn and maintain their languages. FLMD languages reflect the recently arrived communities at our school.

The purpose of the FLMD program is to provide mother tongue language-learning support for reception to year 6 students from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) backgrounds, who speak a language other than English at home as a normal means of communication on a daily basis.

The FLMD languages at Plympton Primary School are:

  • Hindi
  • Nepali
  • Chinese

Recent arrivals are defined as those students (or their parents/caregivers) who have arrived in Australia in the last 5 years according to South Australian census data and school collection data and who use their mother tongue as their prime means of communication on a daily basis.

The recent arrival student eligibility criterion will be used by the DfE panel in the allocation of the FLMD salaries to Plympton Primary School.

Hindi

Step into the vibrant world of Hindi language education with a dedicated Hindi language teacher at Plympton Primary School. With a passion for fostering linguistic skills in young minds, the aim of FLMD (foreign language maintenance and development) program is to bring enthusiasm and knowledge to every lesson, igniting a love for Indian culture and communication.

Every Tuesday, once a week, students are encouraged to embark on a journey of discovery, delving into the richness of the Hindi language through interactive activities, games, and immersive experiences. From mastering basic vocabulary to maintaining a connection to their cultural heritage, every session is crafted to spark curiosity and empower young learners to express themselves confidently in Hindi. The Hindi language classroom at Plympton Primary school constitutes of an environment where collaboration is witnessed, communication is promoted and students have regular opportunities to practice in a supportive environment; where fluency rather than accuracy is the initial aim.

It is crucial for parents to take an active interest in these classes because learning Hindi in primary school provides invaluable support and opportunities for pupils of migrant Indian/Hindi-speaking families overseas, empowering them to embrace their cultural heritage, maintain familial connections, and thrive in diverse linguistic and cultural settings.

Nepali

At Plympton Primary School, Nepali language class is conducted on Tuesday every week. Through this class, we teach our students about social, cultural, health, environment and other relevant topics. It is important for Nepali speaking students to learn their native language which will enable them to practice, promote and preserve their cultural heritage.

Chinese

Chinese language has been provided for eligible students one lesson per week with Ms. Min Mu.

We celebrate the culture and linguistic skills of our students. The Chinese program is planned to incorporate both language and culture and is aligned with the Australian Curriculum to support students to respect, develop and maintain their home language. We cover a variety of topics throughout the year levels, increasing the opportunities of students to remember and utilise their prior learning. Our lessons involve Chinese songs, Chinese craft and traditional children’s games reflecting Chinese societies and culture.

Our Chinese FLMD program is exciting and engaging, our students are always busy learning new and interesting things about China, its language and culture. We strive to help FLMD students to develop stronger bonds to Chinese language and Chinese culture which not only enhances their knowledge but also connects them to their peers, class, family and the wider community.
